The Algarve is undoubtedly Portugal’s most popular tourist destinations, attracting thousands of visitors from across Europe and the rest of the world each year. The area enjoys great weather all year round, with over 300 days of sunshine annually. The busiest time is the summer months of June to August, although the area is also popular for those seeking winter sun.

The eastern edge of the Algarve is ideal for those that love the great outdoors and like to explore the culture and history of their destination. The town of Tavira itself is one of the prettiest in the region and, despite the rise of tourism in the area it has managed to hold on to its original charm. Most guests arrive at Faro airport and the hotel is just a short drive away, so you can be relaxing on the beach soon after touching down.

You never have to go far for refreshments, with a restaurant and lounge bar within the hotel complex. Here you can enjoy a snack or meal and watch big sporting events on the big TV. All rooms feature kitchenette with fridge so you can prepare meals at your own convenience. Things to do nearby

A good way to familiarise yourself with the area and get to know some of the history is to take a walking tour of Tavira town. With dozens of churches, the remains of a medieval castle and beautiful river front gardens to explore, there is something to interest all members of the family. The Golden Club enjoys a prime location for exploring the nearby Ria Formosa nature reserve, home to a fascinating range of bird, plant and animal species. There are walking trails to explore on foot or you can take a boat tour among the lagoons and learn about the area from a local guide.

For those coming to the Algarve to sample the multitude of top-class golf courses, you will not be disappointed, with several fantastic courses on your doorstep. Although many visitors to the Algarve overlook the city of Faro, it is well worth a visit and makes an excellent day trip from Tavira. You can either catch a train from the town centre or rent a car and drive yourself and then spend the day shopping for souvenirs, visiting the museums or soaking up the atmosphere from a pavement cafe.

What have previous guests said?

Previous guests of this modern complex have often commented on the excellent facilities available for guests and the spaciousness of the rooms. A recent holiday by an Irish family was described by the guests as “one of the best holidays ever” due to the excellent location and clean and roomy accommodation.

Undoubtedly one of the main attractions of this hotel for many guests is the peaceful atmosphere, far removed from some of the more touristy places elsewhere in the Algarve. Whilst it might not be ideal for those looking to spend their Algarve break partying, it is perfect for families with children of all ages, couples looking for a romantic break and anyone that wants a comfortable place to really unwind.

Your reviews of the Golden Club Tavira:
Posted by Sara D February 12, 2012

We booked to stay at the Golden Clube in Cabanas last January, based on the photos on the hotel’s website, which matched those on our tour operator’s, and were looking forward to our 10-day holiday in August 2011.
However, when we got to the hotel, the room we were allocated was a far cry from the lovely modern photographs on the websites that had helped us choose this particular hotel. We were given a room in one of the older blocks, beside the roundabout as you enter the complex. The hotel had been built about 40 years ago, and this block looked as if it had never been updated since then. Our room, on the ground floor of Block C, was not fit for habitation, and we complained at the hotel’s reception desk.
The reception staff informed us that there are two levels of accommodation at the hotel. The photographs on the hotel website show “Sunset” or superior rooms, and are in the newer part of the hotel built about 10 years ago, furthest away from the roundabout. The rest of the hotel has “Standard” rooms, but even those vary greatly in standard of accommodation. We were lucky, and were eventually moved to a different room in the main block, which was a huge improvement as it was clean and fresh-smelling, even though it was still a “Standard” room. Other people in our block who also complained during our stay were not as lucky as we were.
The hotel generally was adequate (if a little average and tired) for a busy 3-star hotel, although some of the public toilet facilities were out of order during our stay. The food was fine if somewhat monotonous, and the evening entertainment was what we had expected. Gordon, the events manager, was very helpful organising a special boat-trip for us and the hotel staff and entertainment staff in general were pleasant. The beach was nice, and was only a boat-ride and a short walk away from the hotel.
However, if you do decide to book the Golden Clube in Cabanas, be very careful that you know in advance what you are booking. Don’t be misled (as we were) by the glamorous photographs on the hotel’s website, unless you are positive you are booking the “Sunset” level of accommodation.
