Location

The hotel is situated along the southern Portuguese coast, at the bottom of the Algarve. This is an area which is famously coined ‘the sunshine capital of Europe’, due to the fact that it has over 3000 hours of sunshine in an average year, more than double that of southern England.

It is also known for its particularly hot, dry summers and its arid landscapes, which in the summer time often resemble a desert-like landscape. In July and August the low lying valleys inland can swelter in temperatures of above 40 degrees Celsius, whilst the coastal regions usually benefit from the cooling effect of the sea breeze. Temperatures during the winter time are often fairly pleasant and are generally only a few degrees cooler than summer time in the UK. For much of the year the sea temperatures are warm, peaking at anywhere from 22 to 25 degrees Celsius and pleasant enough for swimming or bathing from May until October.

The Algarve is dominated by large mountains which provide respite from the intense heat of the valleys and is known for its dramatic coastline which hosts some of the best beaches in Europe. The region is also noted for its contrasts – in the interior lie villages which have virtually been untouched by modern civilisation and preserve the traditional culture of the Algarve. Along the coast lie the far more modern, multi-cultural and tourist-focused resorts – where most visitors to the region tend to stay.

Things to do nearby

The Algarve is teeming with attractions, which range from trendy casinos to famous historic sites, many of which are centuries old. The Algarve Seafaris is a popular attraction which offers local boat tours, a relaxing way in which to spend your afternoon on a hot day. There is the picturesque, tourist resort of Albufeira which is only a short journey away and which offers a wide variety of attractions such as golf courses, bars, restaurants and trendy nightclubs. You will also find a zoo marine nearby which provides water flumes and numerous other rides, ideal if you want somewhere to cool off from the sun other than the sea or the pool.

You may also want to explore further afield if you are happy to commit to some travelling time. The city of Lisbon (the capital of Portugal) offers many famous sites such as Praco do Comercio and Castle of Sao Jorge. It is about a 150 mile drive away but is well worth it if you are keen on doing some lengthy sightseeing during your stay in the Algarve. There is also the option of heading across the border into Spain, to Seville, which is a similar distance away to the east. Here you can admire the magnificent cathedral and the Plaza de Espana in one of the major cities accessible from the Algarve.

While these two cities are havens for culture seekers, if you want to limit your travel then there are still plenty of places within the locale that may be of interest you. You could try a visit to Silves, a city which once held the status of capital of the Algarve, or you could travel to Fortaleza de Santa Catarina, a beautiful historic site with superb sea views.
