Location

Its winters are predominantly mild and typical of the Mediterranean. In the summer, temperatures can regularly exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit inland, along the coast it is often several degrees cooler due to the cooling effects of the sea breeze. The sea is warm enough for swimming from about the middle of May up until the end of October (although it is not uncommon to see people swimming in April or November!). High factor sun cream should be applied liberally in the summer. To the north of the coast into the Algarve’s interior lie numerous hills and mountains, where tourists may sometimes escape the noisier coastal resorts for some peace and quiet. There are numerous villages which are centuries old, although even some of these places can become quite busy during the peak season.

You can head further inland and explore some of the famous attractions in this region of the Algarve. You could also take a trip to the magnificent fort at the resort of Lagos, or head off to the busy and thriving resort of Albufeira, further along the coast, with casinos, nightclubs and plenty of bars. A long day trip to the historic cities of Lisbon and Seville (for culture seekers) is also an option during your holiday. The Algarve offers an immeasurable number of historic attractions and these can be researched on the Internet or in various travel shops.

The fantastic beach known as Praia do Rocha provides stunning scenery – turquoise seas and quiet, relaxing rocky coves close by. There is excellent swimming and sunbathing along the sands and the area is a perfect location for holiday album photos. It is one of the most impressive in the Algarve with golden sands and beautiful cliffs. All along the beach you can find hundreds of sunloungers to relax on, which also offer parasols to keep you shaded from the hot sun. Snorkelling is also possible in the clear waters.
