The Club Praia Vau Aparthotel is situated on the southern coast of Portugal, near to the port of Portimao. The beach is one of the most impressive on the Iberian Peninsula (and arguably the whole of Europe), known for its crystal clear waters, golden sands and the secluded rocky coves nearby. It is an excellent setting for landscape photography and family album photos, mainly due to its dramatic scenery and the long sunshine hours.

The Algarve is known for its hot, arid summers (the hottest in Europe) and temperatures inland can often exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit during the summer. To the north of the coast there are large mountains and steep valleys that contain medieval villages and stunning views. It is here that some visitors may find relief from the busy coastal resorts in the summer. The hotel’s location next to the coast means that a sea breeze is present much of the time and it is not often that the temperatures here will be uncomfortably high, even at the height of summer. There are plenty of opportunities to explore the local area and the rest of the Algarve through the road networks and bus services operating in the area.

Things to do nearby

The Algarve resort of Portimao provides excellent shopping opportunities (including a hypermarket) and the local nightlife is particularly vibrant, catering for the tourist boom during the high season. A trip to the historic town of Silves (which was once the ancient capital of the Algarve) provides an excellent day out for the family and a cultural learning experience for children.

The bustling resort of Albufeira, further along the coast offers an excellent variety of top of the range bars and clubs, with a particularly tourist-friendly atmosphere between May and early September. Another place worth visiting in the Algarve is Fortaleza de Santa Catarina – a historic site (dating back to the 17th century) that affords magnificent views of the coastline from the marina of Portimao to Ferragudo and Praia da Rocha.

For the young and old alike, there is a popular water park (Slide and Splash Water Park) near Lagoa which runs for over six months from April until October. Children and adults alike will also enjoy the excellent zoo marine located at Guia (about 10km from Albufeira) which provides a good family day out. Here there are plenty of fun rides such as the pirate ship and the water flume – perfect for cooling off from the raging Algarve sun. Portimao also offers plenty of retail therapy with its wide selection of boutique shops, shoe shops and perfumeries.
