It is a particularly popular region for golfers who wish to play during the winter months. The Algarve is a wonderful place for holidaymakers looking for fun in the sun, but also offers tourists the opportunity to take in some of the interesting history that remains in tact throughout the region, such as the beautiful Moorish castle at the historic inland town of Silves. History is also reflected in its many churches and chapels. Portimao has developed from a traditional fishing village into a bustling and lively holiday resort. It has some of the best beaches in the Algarve.

From the 1930s to 1950s Portimao became a favourite haunt of British intellectuals and writers, and since then has grown to be one of the largest and best known holiday resorts. It is rumoured that the bridge over the local Arade River was built with left over iron from the Eiffel Tower’s construction.
