Other sports which are catered for in the area include tennis, bike riding and water sports. In common with other coastal resort area, water sports are popular in the Algarve region and there are many clubs that offer formal courses and individual tuition, for example on the nearby Nuestra Señora de Rocha Beach.
Alternatively, if you enjoy a more relaxed holiday, you could visit one of the many bars in the town centre of Armacao de Pera. There will always be a friendly face to greet you and show you the local drinks and food. You could then perhaps walk down to the beach and catch the sun for a few hours before visiting one of the many restaurants in the town.

Not being convinced that canoeing is a pleasant pastime, I had some reservations about taking out a kayak along the Ria Formosa. But I have been won over! This is a fantastic experience and probably the best way to explore the wonders of this unique area. Hobie Kayak Tours run full day trips along the Ria Formosa, from Faro Island to Ilha Deserta (Deserted Island). This is an amazing part of the Algarve – the Ria Formosa Natural Park covers around 18,000 hectares and 60 kms of coastline. It is a constantly shifting network of inlets, lagoons and sandbanks. The Park is home to a rich diversity of marine and wildlife, particularly birdlife. The waters of the Ria Formosa are the spawning grounds for 80% of the different species of fish to be found in the Atlantic. Your guide on the trips, Steve, is passionate about the beauty and wildlife of the area and his enthusiasm is contagious. On the tours you will probably come across sea slugs, star fish, anemones, herons, egrets, storks and perhaps flamingos.
The kayaks are, believe it or not, very comfortable. The back support is just right and the pedals can be adjusted for pretty much all sizes. They are wonderfully stable in the water and easy to handle with the steering right at your fingertips – so none of those stomach lurching moments when you want to head back to dry land but the canoe will only go around in circles.
The kayaks work on a pedal propulsion system – your leg movements, like an exercise stepper – propel the kayaks silently through the water. Being silent, they don`t scare away any wildlife so you can have wonderfully close encounters with some of the Ria Formosa`s more timid inhabitants. During the tours you are accompanied by a support boat and there are several rest stops for refreshments and you don`t need to be super fit to manage the kayaks. There are various types of kayaks available for the tours, some are two seaters and all the kayaks can take sails turning them into mini sail boats. The kayaks can reach a speed of 7 knots, although 3 or 4 knots is the usual speed during the tours. Hobie Kayak Tours also offer a trip from Tavira towards Fabrica.
Most visitors to the Algarve will have seen the Ria Formosa from the air as their plane comes in to land at Faro airport. Take a Hobie Pedal Kayak tour and you will see it from the best possible perspective. Highly recommended.

Espadarte is a very stable, safe and comfortable boat; it has twin 70hp motors and is licensed for 14, seating 12 with ease. The lunch & afternoon tour departs Olhao Taxi pontoon at 13.00 (1pm) to Culatra Island, where we have lunch in a very special restaurant that normally serves some of the 600 residents of the fishing community of the island. I stress that the food is full of flavour, as it is served to the community of the island rather than catering for the tourist market, as most of the restaurants in the town do. After lunch we take a short walk in the village, exploring the narrow streets with our guide from the Ria Formosa natural park, Steve (also your Captain, waiter, and story teller! nurse, life guard ect.)
We then cruise to the east, to a deserted beach to relax, swim, snorkel, or just take in the nature, we depart after 30 / 40 minutes in the direction of Armona Island when on arrival we have an hour or more to take in all the secrets that this little island has to offer (crystal waters, fantastic views, cool beer, and great coffee). Then departing for Olhao, passing the Old water mill and a very small residential island (with no electric or water for the inhabitants) by the name of Coco Island. Returning just before Sunset.
