The Pestana Dom João Village – Alvor

With some 150 kilometres of golden sands, year-round sunny weather, a dramatic landscape and no end of opportunity for adventure and exploration, it’s no wonder that the Algarve region of Portugal attracts thousands of UK holiday makers each year.
From sleepy fishing towns to lively resorts such as Alvor, the Algarve is popular with all types of travellers – from adventure tourists to families and romantic couples. The four-star Pestana Dom João Village enjoys an unbeatable location adjoining the famous Alvor Beach and close to the holiday resort of the same name. A luxurious complex that was recently given a top-to-toe refurbishment, the Pestana Dom João Village offers a full range of excellent facilities in a beautiful location.
Location
The Pestana Dom João Village lies adjacent to the beautiful Alvor Beach, and within 15 minutes walk of Alvor village centre, with its many restaurants and good bars. The resort complex lies close to the Alvor Estuary, one of Portugal’s most important bird sanctuaries and home to some beautiful rare varieties.
Alvor itself lies at the western end of the Algarve, and most visitors will arrive at Faro Airport before taking a coach transfer to the resort. The wide, sandy beach at Alvor stretches for around seven kilometres, and due to its size never feels overcrowded, even in peak tourist season. The area is popular not just with beach bunnies, but also with water sports enthusiasts, adventure tourists, families and golfers taking advantage of the Algarve’s many excellent courses. Whilst a few late-night bars and discos provide some nightlife activity in Alvor centre, partiers will need to take a bus or taxi to the nearby Algarve resort towns of Portimao or Praia da Rocha, where the scene is generally much livelier.
Rooms
The resort complex is made up of an hotel, the Pestana Dom João II; an aparthotel, the Pestana Alvor Atlântico; and a selection of spacious individual villas.
Altogether, the spacious complex features 330 hotel rooms (some with kitchenette), 22 suites and 32 villas. All rooms come equipped with air conditioning, satellite television, radio, hairdryer and safe. Villas also feature a living room and sunshade. The rooms are spacious, comfortable and immaculately maintained with modern, tasteful décor.
Facilities
Resort facilities at the Pestana Dom João Village are excellent. There are two outdoor saltwater pools, along with a further heated indoor pool and a gym.
The Pestana Kids’ Club offers events and activities for young visitors to the Algarve from June through to December, and regular live music and dancing events are laid on at the complex. Mini-golf is also available at the complex, and staff at the hotel are happy to arrange group excursions to visit local historical sites, beauty spots and sports events. The complex is also popular with business travellers in the Algarve thanks to its conference rooms. .
Things to do nearby
The sunny Algarve boasts no end of activities for visitors to enjoy. The region is, of course, justly famous for its excellent golf courses, and there are several excellent courses within easy reach of the Pestana Dom João Village.
The Algarve’s coastal setting means water sports are an obvious choice – with windsurfing, sailing, swimming and snorkelling all popular options. Guests staying at the hotel complex are free to take advantage of tennis courts at the nearby Pestana Alvor Praia and Pestana Delfim hotels, as well as the driving range and putting green at the Pestana Delfim. Horse riding is available nearby, and there is a good water sports centre for those who can’t get enough of the sea.
