The Algarve is a beautiful stretch of coastline running along the southernmost region of Portugal, which comprises over 150 kilometres of golden beaches, rugged cliffs, grottos, lagoons and warm Mediterranean sunshine (although technically it meets the Atlantic Ocean!).

The historic Alvor resort is renowned for its narrow cobbled streets, splendid restaurants, bars and live music entertainment. Indeed, the idyllic coastal town boasts stunning natural scenery and experiences over 3,000 hours of warm sunshine each year! Furthermore, Alvor is an oasis of tranquillity in the Algarve, which is generally heavily affected by tourism. Indeed, Alvor is the Algarve at its most serene.

Location

The Alvor resort is situated 4 kilometres away from the town of Portimão, which provides excellent shopping opportunities, and is approximately 3 kilometres away from Praia da Rocha and Praia da Vau, which are popular destinations in Portugal for tourists in search of a more vibrant night scene.

For anybody in search of an outdoor excursion, Quinta da Rocha Nature Reserve is also nearby, whilst Faro Airport is about an hour away by car. The Pestana Delfim Hotel is situated just off the truly beautiful Três Irmãos Beach and is within walking distance of the main Alvor resort and bus routes to nearby towns.

Rooms

The splendid Pestana Delfim Hotel comprises 312 rooms across its 16 floors. Each room features a fully equipped en suite bathroom, living area, air conditioning and heating.

Inland facing rooms will not have a balcony, but sea view rooms will – and these are spacious enough for several chairs and a table. The rooms also include a mini bar, satellite television including music channels, pay-to-view television, a safety deposit box (with insurance and charged separately) and hairdryer. Room service is available and cleaning operates throughout the week. In short, the Pestana Delfim Hotel offers typical 4 star accommodation in Portugal’s quaint Alvor resort.

Facilities

The Pestana Delfim Hotel is situated adjacent to the Pestana Alvor Praia Hotel and it is worth noting that guests will be able to use the facilities of any Pestana complex in Alvor. The Delfim features a large outdoor salt water swimming pool with a bar in the centre that operates during summer.

There is also a childrens’ swimming pool and a health club comprising gym, sauna, jacuzzi, Turkish bath, massage parlour, beautician and hydrotherapy services, all of which are charged for separately. A hairdressers is available for those in need of a cut, whilst a games room provides hours of fun for people of most ages. The evening entertainment on offer at the hotel attracts many guests, whilst nobody can go wrong with the hotel’s two excellent restaurants and bars. There are plenty of places to stay in Portugal, but, if in need of a little rest, relaxation and fun without breaking the bank, then the Alvor resort’s Pestana Delfim Hotel offers exceptional value for money.

Things to do in Alvor

Guests staying at the Pestana Delfim Hotel can enjoy a range of activities besides basking in the warm Mediterranean sunshine. Indeed, cycling, walking, sight-seeing and horse riding are all popular in the quaint resort of Alvor, and there are a good number of golf courses in the area too.

Additionally, water sports such as scuba diving, snorkelling, windsurfing and jet-skiing provide a little more excitement, whilst tourists will also enjoy a visit to the 12th century cathedral and the Monchique Mountains. Renowned in Portugal for its delicious fresh fish and seafood dishes, Alvor contains plenty of restaurants. Moreover, those situated near the beach or harbour provide that picture perfect sunset meal.

What have previous guests said?

The Pestana Delfim Hotel lives up to its 4 star rating and certainly looks the part with its impressive 16 storey stature. Although guests generally leave very favourable reviews about both the hotel and Alvor resort, some criticism has been levelled at the walk to the hotel, which involves a trek up quite a steep hill. Potential guests should bear this in mind before booking, however it should not be an issue for most people.

Notwithstanding this, the hotel rooms are described as clean, fully furnished and comfortable with a tasteful, if slightly dated, décor. Nevertheless, on that final point the hotel is undergoing refurbishment at the time of our review and as such many minor flaws will be ironed out. Indeed, this magnificent hotel is as good as any 4 star hotel in Portugal, yet the prices are in many cases far more competitive.
