Mar E Serra Hotel – Alvor, Algarve

The ancient coastal town of Alvor is said to have been founded by the Carthaginians and it has been occupied by the Romans, Moors and 13th century Christians. Although Alvor is still architecturally interesting, the original village and its castle were destroyed in the major earthquakes of 1532 and 1755.

Today, Alvor resort is an idyllic coastal town renowned for its fresh fish and seafood dishes, narrow cobbled streets, restaurants, bars and live music entertainment. Alvor is situated on the Algarve, which is a region that stretches across the southernmost shoreline of Portugal and comprises year round sunshine, over 150 kilometres of sandy beaches, rugged cliffs, natural lagoons and enchanting grottos.

The Alvor resort is a tranquil destination that is not as heavily affected by tourism as other parts of the Algarve. Boasting narrow winding streets, shops, bars, restaurants and live music, there is plenty to do in Alvor that does not directly involve the Mediterranean sun, sea and sand. Location

Alvor is situated approximately 4 kilometres away from the commercial town of Portimão and 3 kilometres away from the popular beaches of Praia da Rocha and Praia da Vau. Quinta da Rocha Nature Reserve is also nearby and makes for a perfect outdoors getaway, whilst Faro Airport is just over an hour away.

Alvor experiences some of the best weather conditions in Portugal, with 3,000 hours of annual sunshine and summer temperatures in excess of 30 Celsius. Mar E Serra Hotel is situated some 800 metres from the centre of Alvor and its 7 kilometres of golden sandy beach.

Rooms

The Mar E Serra Hotel comprises fully furnished and tastefully decorated one and two bedroom apartments. The one bedroom apartments feature a large living room area, fully equipped bathroom and enclosed twin bedroom (two single beds). The two bedroom apartments feature two separate twin bedrooms.

Both types of apartment include satellite television, direct dial telephone, a kitchenette with oven and fridge, and either a balcony or terrace. Room service is provided on a regular basis. In summary, the rooms in the Mar E Serra Hotel are of the high standard expected of those in Portugal’s Alvor resort.

Facilities

As far as facilities go, the Mar E Serra Hotel is on par with any other 3-4 star hotel in the Algarve. The reception area comprises a currency exchange service, which is always useful, and the staff are friendly and helpful. The hotel’s most prominent feature is its swimming pool, which is accompanied by a sun terrace complete with sun beds and loungers.

A poolside bar, which is conveniently open for breakfast, makes sunbathing by the pool an even more enjoyable experience. Guests staying at the Mar E Serra apartments will experience a pleasant stay in the quiet Alvor resort.

Things to do in Alvor

Alvor resort is renowned not only for its warm Mediterranean climate, beautiful surroundings and splendid fresh fish and seafood dishes, it is also a popular destination for other activities. Indeed, although Alvor’s unbroken sunshine tends to attract tourists in search of the perfect bronzed body, there is something for everyone in this quiet town. Such activities include walking, cycling, sight-seeing, golf and horse riding. In fact, golf is an extremely popular activity in Alvor and there are numerous courses here and across Portugal’s Algarve more generally.

For the more adventure-minded, water sports in the area include snorkelling, scuba diving, windsurfing and jet-skiing. Tourists can also avail of the 12th century cathedral and the Monchique Mountains or the nearby destinations of Portimão and Praia da Rocha, which are well worth a visit for the Casino, nightclubs, bars, restaurants and beaches. In summary, there is plenty to do in Alvor that will appeal to a wide range of people.

Generally, the Mar E Serra Hotel in Portugal attracted very good reviews. Guests do not claim that the hotel is the very best available in Alvor, however, in terms of value for money the Mar E Serra apartments is said to be extremely competitive.

Self-catering holidays often substitute quality for cheap prices, but this does not appear to be the case with the Mar E Serra Hotel. Indeed, guests at the hotel enjoyed their stay and found it a convenient base for exploring the Alvor resort and surrounding area.
