Stretching across the southern coastline of Portugal, the Algarve is renowned for its sandy beaches, rugged cliffs and year round sunshine.

Although it borders the Atlantic Ocean, the Algarve is classified as having a Mediterranean climate. Altura is a relatively small resort that is situated on the eastern side of the Algarve, which is close to the Spanish border. The resort offers peace and relaxation in abundance and is certainly one of the more tranquil and scenic destinations in Portugal, which makes it very popular with families and couples.


The resort of Altura is situated approximately 4 kilometres from Monte Gordo, 7 kilometres from Vila Real de Santo António and 57 kilometres from Faro Airport, which roughly equates to a 45 minute transfer. The picturesque Roman town of Tavira is also close to Altura. Summer weather in Altura is amongst the longest and driest in Portugal and the winter is usually mild with only limited rainfall. Indeed, Altura only receives an average of 50 days rainfall each year.

July and August are the resort’s two hottest months and it is during this time that the average temperature reaches 30 celsius. Coastal breezes provide a pleasant feel despite the intense heat, while even off-season temperatures remain warm at around 15-20 celsius. Furthermore, Altura receives over 3,000 hours of sunshine each year! To complement the fine weather perfectly, the Azul Praia Hotel, which was built in 1992, is situated within 300 metres of Ponta Negra beach, which is among Portugal’s most beautiful sands along the Algarve!


The Azul Praia Hotel, which was recently renovated in 2004, comprises 22 double bedrooms and 5 suites in its 3-storey building that stands some 300 metres away from the main avenue in Altura. Each room features a private bathroom, air conditioned bedrooms, lounge area and balcony.

A sofa bed is included in the lounge area, which is ideal for larger parties, and the rooms also contain a mini bar, telephone, satellite or cable television, radio, hairdryer and a safety deposit box. The rooms are suitably furnished and are attended regularly by friendly room service staff. In summary, the Azul Praia Hotel provides guests with a relaxed and comfortable stay in one of Portugal’s quieter resorts.

Room service is also provided regularly by friendly staff and the hotel in general is a clean, quiet and enjoyable retreat on Portugal’s Algarve coastline.

Things to do in Altura

Portugal is no stranger to sunshine with its Mediterranean climate and, as mentioned above, Altura is famed for its many hours of unbroken sunshine. Whilst the weather is an obvious draw for tourists, the bronzing of bodies should not be confined to the Azul Praia Hotel’s excellent poolside facilities. Indeed, walking and cycling are popular pastimes in the area and golfers are also spoilt for choice as to where to strike iron.

If guests can be tempted off the Ponta Negra Beach for any length of time, they will discover a resort that is not as touristy as the neighbouring Monte Gordo, which is easily accessible and contains a casino. In the absence of a nightclub scene, the area of Azul Praia is perfect for finding peace and relaxation. Furthermore, Altura is renowned for the superb dishes on offer in local restaurants and its gentle pace.

The Azul Praia Hotel in Portugal attracts good reviews. Guests have reported a comfortable stay at the hotel and that staff had been friendly at all times. Whilst some feedback did draw attention to the absence of a heavy nightclub scene, most guests applauded the resort’s quiet appeal and just about all tourists thoroughly enjoyed their holiday in Altura.

It seems that UK tourists specifically chose Altura for its tranquility and feedback suggests that the Azul Praia Hotel lives up to its billing. Whilst a lively nightlife is not far away in Monte Gordo, Altura is certainly regarded as one of Portugal’s more relaxing destinations and Ponta Negra Beach was a favourite amongst many visitors.
