A guide to Quinta do Lago, Algarve, Portugal
Holidays on the southern coast of Portugal have always proved a popular choice amongst Brits in search of year-round sunshine, fun attractions and good quality accommodation. And so it is that every year thousands of us take the two hour flight to Faro to enjoy the endearing seaside towns, villages and luxury resorts that decorate the honey coloured coastline of the Algarve.
The resort of Quinta do Lago
Just a 20 minute drive west from Faro airport will lead you to the sophisticated resort area of Quinta do Lago, comprising 2000 acres of beautiful parkland and pine forest peppered with whitewashed villas and holiday cottages set in manicured gardens. This is a custom-built luxury resort designed to relax and revitalise those who are lucky enough to enjoy a stay here, and the good news is, cheap holidays in Quinta do Lago are not so difficult to find.
Central to Quinta do Lago is its fabulous championship golf course, set within acres of tranquil pines, which is guaranteed to get even the rookies excited about taking a few swings on the fairways. Having hosted several Portuguese Opens and international tournaments, the venue is well known amongst the golfing fraternity as being one of the top courses on the Algarve. Of course, golf is not for everyone, and Quinta do Lago is well-equipped to offer a wide range of alternative leisure activities to anyone seeking an active holiday, with tennis, horse-riding and clay-pigeon shooting available in the resort.
Those wanting to take Quinta do Lago holidays at a more leisurely pace will find a haven of beauty and tranquillity in which to do so. Whether it’s relaxing by the pool or watching the waves crash upon the shore at Quinta do Lago’s 3 kilometre swathe of sandy beach, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to ways to unwind. The resort is set within acres of stunning countryside which is great fun to explore on foot, with plenty of nature trails and leisurely strolls through fragrant pine woods to the fringes of the Rio Formosa Nature Reserve to the east. These wetlands are of great importance as a protected coastal reserve. Its mudflats, lagoons and coastal dunes are an important refuge and breeding ground for rare flora and fauna and it is a choice site for spotting flamingos and bee-eaters. When the nature trails are complete you will wish to enjoy an indulgent meal. Restaurants here cater for international tastes but if you fancy a change, the authentic Portuguese eateries in the nearby town of Almancil will provide a welcome treat. If you have a healthy appetite for shopping, Quinta do Lago will certainly not disappoint. Quinta do Lago holidays are all about style, and there is a superb range of boutique shops at the resort’s arcade Quinta shopping with exclusive designer outlets which are a delight to explore even if your pocket can’t take the strain. Adjacent to this delightful shopping precinct you will find Bougainvillea Plaza, the ideal place to relax and read the papers over a refreshing drink at one of the smart pavement cafés.
Accommodation at Quinta do Lago
This is a beautifully designed resort where it is a pleasure to select a holiday rental. The lawns and green areas are fresh and pristine and in summer the avenues and walkways are lined with pink and white bougainvillea in bloom. Everyone is catered for here, with a complete scale of accommodation starting with basic apartments and complexes of townhouses, many with communal pools or their very own plunge pool. A step up the scale finds larger and more spacious villas to suit families, and many of these are built around complexes with their own gym facilities. The more exclusive developments at Quinta do Lago are on the scale of beautiful mansion properties in their own grounds all furnished and decorated to a very high standard. Although the quality of villas and apartments is high throughout the resort, it is still fairly easy to find cheap holidays in Quinta do Lago if you are willing to make compromises in terms of accommodation and avoid the most popular times.
Out and about
Quinta do Lago holidays offer everything you could need in terms of relaxation and outdoor activities, but if you are tempted to explore beyond the complex you will find a wealth of attractions within easy reach. The resort of Vilamoura is just a few minutes’ drive away and Albufeira, with its vibrant atmosphere, colourful local markets and sandy beaches is definitely worth a visit. The Algarve is an excellent family friendly destination and with a variety of waterparks in the vicinity you will never be short of ways to keep the children entertained.
