The western Algarve coast of Portugal has, in recent times, grown into one of the most attractive and popular tourist destinations in Europe. Praia da Rocha is roughly a 50 minute drive from Faro, and is located squeezed in between the town of Portimao and the peaceful village of Alvor. At the end of this walkway, further down the beach, is St Catarina’s fort. Built in 1621 to protect the surrounding area from pirates, the fort offers spectacular views back along the coastline and also out over the sea.

The marina is a newer construction, and is home to restaurants and bars, where one can sit and have a meal or a drink with the view of the boats and yachts going by. Also, this is a great place to pick up one of the many boat trips available. These trips include fishing trips, beach barbecues, visits to other towns, trips to view the sea life, such as whales, dolphins and sharks and even diving trips. All these and more can be arranged and leave from the marina, meaning there is no excuse for not having seen more than the beach on a cheap holiday in Praia da Rocha.
Some people however might see a Praia da Rocha holiday as the ideal opportunity to experience the famous Algarve golfing experience. Close to the town are many top class golf courses which make for an excellent day out for the golfers on holiday in Praia da Rocha.
When the sun drops however, a Praia da Rocha holiday shows itself as one of the livelier in the Algarve. There are a large number of restaurants and quieter bars for those who are seeking a quiet meal and drink, but there is a commensurate number of late night bars and discos catering for those who desire a night on the tiles, including a good number of Irish bars. For those wanting a little taste of Vegas on their holiday in Praia da Rocha, there is a large casino in the town, with a restaurant inside too.
As nice as a Praia da Rocha holiday is, there is no excuse to limit your trip to the town itself, as there are many interesting and fun days out to be had. Located a mere 15-20 minute walk away, and accessible by a short bus ride for those wanting a truly relaxed holiday, the charming historical town of Portimao is just along the coast, and too has a number of quality restaurants and watering holes to wile away an evening. There are more active options, such as opportunities for rock climbing, and a fun day for all the family can be had at Aqualand, the water park located nearby.
A cheap holiday in Praia da Rocha is now easier to find than ever, and as can be seen above there is never a shortage of things to see and do. A Praia da Rocha holiday, regardless of what you are after in a break, should have something to offer to everyone.
