A guide to Monte Gordo, Algarve, Portugal

A guide to Monte Gordo, Algarve, Portugal

The Algarve in Portugal has, for the past 30 years at least, established itself as one of the prime holiday locations in Europe, if not the world. One of the resorts in this area is the relatively new tourist town of Monte Gordo.

Monte Gordo is extremely close to the frontier town of Vila Real de Santo Antonio, and as said above is a relatively new addition to the extremely popular Algarve holiday resort area. Cheap holidays in Monte Gordo have become more and more popular in recent times due to the bright and cheerful nature of the town itself. In fact, Monte Gordo holidays serve to offer almost everything one could want from a beautiful Algarve town.

Monte Gordo holidays tend to offer a more “real” Portuguese feel, as the fishing tradition of the town is still very much alive, with the charming sight of fishermen delivering their day’s catch by bike still very much prevalent. The town itself has come on as a tourist destination in recent years, with the sleepy feel of the town kept alongside more tourist-friendly facilities, such as more restaurants and bars. However, proper nightlife is not really in keeping with the quiet feel of the town, and is therefore few and far between.

However, there is still plenty to see and do on a Monte Gordo holiday. Opened in 1996, the casino means those on a Monte Gordo holiday can have a little taste of the Vegas atmosphere! A must-visit for anyone on a cheap holiday in Monte Gordo, the casino offers a modern gaming room with over 200 slot machines. For more entertainment, there is a nightly floorshow and there are food and drinks available there also.

For many people considering a Monte Gordo holiday the beach will be an extremely important factor, and there is no scope for disappointment here. Monte Gordo boasts one of the largest beaches in the Algarve, and the resort’s close proximity to the Mediterranean means it can boast some of the warmest waters also. The beach, like many in the Algarve region, offers great opportunities for water sports, with diving, wind surfing and snorkelling among the activities on offer. Although the sea has a reputation for being quite choppy at times, it is perfectly safe and there is a lifeguard on duty during the peak summer months to assist with water safety and to intervene should a rare incident happen to occur.

Of course, a cheap holiday in Monte Gordo need not mean you being constricted to Monte Gordo exclusively, as there are other things to see and do. A must see for anyone interested in history, a short drive north of the town is Castro Marim, which was the first headquarters of the Military Order of Christ, the heirs of the Templars in Portugal. Looking out toward Spain, the town walls hold a smaller castle structure inside, and the town itself is a lovely place to visit.

Running into the Atlantic approximately 2 miles from Monte Gordo is the Guidiana River, a natural frontier for over 2,000 years. Anyone on a cheap holiday in Monte Gordo can take advantage of this by going on one of the many river cruises, which offer a beautiful and tranquil view of the Algarve region near the Spanish border. These cruises are a peaceful way to see the Algarve, and sometimes include dinner and drinks. Finally, if you were to grow tired of the beach at Monte Gordo, though this is unlikely, a short 2km trip out brings you to the hidden gem of Praia Verde, which doesn’t just have a lovely beach but also has a charming restaurant serving excellent local seafood with great views of the sea.

In short, if you are looking for an Algarve getaway that is a little more on the quiet side, a cheap holiday in Monte Gordo might just fit the bill, as the up and coming destination already has a lot of amenities and attractions in place, and more will undoubtedly be added in the coming years.
